Easy Costumes for the Entire Family

When you need the perfect costume for that Halloween bash, or your kids cannot decide what they want to be (and you are all out of time), choose one of these simple – and frugal – costume ideas.

Decade Dress Up – What is more fun than reliving the past for one night, even if it was not your past? Do you have a favorite decade? With a quick trip to Goodwill or a rummage through your parents’ or grandparents’ closets, you can craft a creative costume evoking the best of any era.

  • 20’s Gangster. Top off a suit with a fedora or velour top hat.
  • 20’s Flapper. Add a sequin headband, boa and fake pearls to a drop-waist dress.
  • 50’s Sock Hop. Pull on a hoop skirt and cardigan or jeans and a white t-shirt (with sleeves rolled up of course). Tie your hair back in a ponytail or slick it back with gel.
  • 60’s Hippy. Groovy, man! Adorn yourself in tie die, light colored glasses, long hair wigs, headbands and peace signs.
  • 80’s Rocker. Pull on a pair of old, acid wash ripped jeans, a concert t-shirt, loads of bangles, lace gloves or leg warmers.

For more ideas on your favorite decade, visit the Family Education website to search your favorite.

Tasty Treats – What could be more fun than dressing up as your favorite foods?

  • Spaghetti and Meatballs. Put on a red sweat suit, add a metal colander full of mop heads and brown pom poms and you have become your favorite meal.
  • Root Beer. Turn a barrel into your favorite fizzy drink. Paint it with your favorite soda’s design and make holes for your arms and head.
  • Bunch of Grapes. Put on purple or green tights and shirt. Attach purple or green balloons.

For instructions on how to put these together and more, visit Family Fun.

Homemade Houseware – Look no further than your kitchen appliances for inspiration.

  • Refrigerator. Paint a box white, black or silver. Just add a handle and it becomes a refrigerator. Include magnets and “A+” papers for a more personalized look.
  • Basket of Laundry. Cut a hole in the bottom of a laundry basket, pin an odd sock here and there and you’ve become a basket of laundry.
  • Bubble Bath. Take a plastic 12-gallon tub. Cut a hole in the bottom so you can slip it over your body. Put on a shower cap and fill the tub with white balloons. Don’t forget your rubber ducky!
