Is Marriage Good for Your Heart? We all know love is a “matter of the heart,” but did you know that marriage could directly affect your heart’s health? There have been many studies into the effects of marital strain on cardiovascular health. In a recent study, interactions between spouses were found to be directly related to the couples’s cardiovascular health. It was also found that couples who did not have a healthy relationship had an increase in blood pressure when their spouse was present and a decrease in blood pressure when the spouse was absent. The opposite was found in couples with happy marriages. It has also been shown that positive marital interactions can boost your immunity and reduce the risk of heart disease by keeping your stress hormones low. Uncontrolled stress can lead to certain physical problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, chest pains or even irregular heart beats. Problems in a marriage are not always directly related to the marriage. Certain stressors, such as illness, death of a loved one, work overload and financial concerns, often cause the problems. Although these issues may not be directly related to the marriage, they do directly affect your attitude, and can therefore directly affect your marriage. Be sure to discuss problems with your partner and fill him or her in on the things in life that are stressors to you. It is much easier to sympathize and console someone when you have an idea of what is occurring in their daily life. Make it a point to sit down with your partner for dinner (without distractions such as TV) and discuss the day. It is much better to “vent” any frustrations you have from the day, rather than holding these emotions inside for long periods. There are many physical, mental, emotional and behavioral symptoms of stress: headaches, forgetfulness, depression, nervousness, critical attitude, excessive eating and frequent job changes. If you notice you or your partner is experiencing any of these symptoms, try to take affirmative action and deal with it immediately. Noticing and actively pursuing a resolution to these problems will help alleviate the stress these issues place on your marriage. If you or your partner are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, it might be best to contact a professional. Happiness and laughter are known to actually lower your blood pressure, increase oxygen intake and improve your circulation. Make sure your marriage is full of both. If you find yourself becoming agitated or stressed, make sure to take a moment to yourself and focus on relieving that stress. Deep breathing is one great way to lower your stress levels, as well as eating right and exercising often. Also, make it a point to say nice things to your significant other. We often take for granted that our partners know we love them; it is wise to express the love you have for one another often. As you can see, it is not only important to maintain a healthy and happy relationship, it is vital to both individual’s health. By resolving issues and making an effort to help your spouse through stressful situations, you are vastly improving your health and the health of those around you. Take a minute to evaluate your relationship. Are you helping or hurting your spouse’s heart? |
